Reaching People Enriching Lives

GMDC’s approach to CSR centres on improving everyday life in the communities around its operations. Working through Gramya Vikas Trust as its CSR arm, the company supports initiatives in education, healthcare, skill development, rural infrastructure and heritage preservation. From providing learning materials to students and bringing healthcare services to remote villages to creating employment pathways for youth and strengthening local infrastructure, these efforts focus on long term community well being. As GMDC expands its presence across Odisha, its CSR programmes continue to build partnerships with communities and contribute to inclusive and sustainable development.

Learning Support for Rural Students

For many children in rural communities, something as simple as a notebook can make a real difference to their ability to learn. For more than a decade, GMDC and Gramya Vikas Trust (GVT) have supported school students in project areas by providing essential learning materials.

Students from Classes 1 to 8 receive notebooks, while secondary school students are given fullscape books according to their academic needs. In the past year alone, over 35,000 students received 4,10,827 books, helping them stay prepared for school and continue their education with the resources they need.

Bringing Healthcare Closer to Villages

Access to healthcare remains a challenge in many rural regions. Through the Jan Chikitsa Seva Programme, GMDC–GVT brings primary healthcare directly to communities in Gujarat and Odisha.

Mobile medical units travel to villages, offering consultations, diagnostic services and medicines closer to where people live. Health camps and telemedicine services connect patients with specialist doctors when needed.

So far, the programme has reached more than 230 villages, providing over 2,59,000 general consultations, organising nearly 5,000 health camps, and distributing free medicines to more than 2,50,000 people. For many families, this initiative ensures timely medical care without the need to travel long distances.

Scholarships that Support Academic Dreams

Education can open doors, but many rural families struggle to afford it. Since 2010–11, GMDC–GVT has supported students from the Lakhpat Block of Kutch through scholarships at Veerayatan Vidyapeeth in Mandvi.

The scholarship programme covers tuition fees, hostel accommodation, meals, books and other academic expenses. Over the years, more than 200 students have benefited from this support.

Building Learning Spaces: GMDC Atul Vidyalaya

In partnership with the Atul Group, GMDC–GVT established GMDC Atul Vidyalaya in Kadipani, Kawant Taluka of Chhota Udepur district. The English-medium school began operations in May 2024 and currently educates 184 students, many from tribal and underserved communities.

Beyond classroom learning, the school provides trained teachers, nutrition support, remedial classes and opportunities for co-curricular activities. The initiative has been supported through ₹95.37 lakh in CSR funding, with GMDC–GVT contributing a major share.

The programme involved an investment of ₹6.76 lakh.

Helping Students See Clearly

Good vision plays an important role in learning. In collaboration with Vision Spring, GMDC–GVT organised eye screening camps in schools across Angul District in Odisha.

Around 2,800 students received free eye examinations. Those identified with vision issues were provided with eyeglasses, enabling them to read more comfortably, participate in classroom activities and remain engaged in their studies.

Nutritious Meals for Better Learning

Hunger can affect both attendance and concentration in school. To support the health and well-being of students from low-income rural families, GMDC–GVT runs a mid-day meal programme in selected schools.

Skill Development that Leads to Employment

The Samarthya Employment-Oriented Skill Training Programme, launched in 2023, helps young people bridge the gap between education and employment. The programme operates through six residential training centres, offering vocational courses across 12 trades.

Training focuses on practical skills, workplace readiness and soft skills. Partnerships with companies such as Zydus Healthcare and Torrent Power help trainees transition into employment.

So far, over 2,130 youth have been trained, with a placement rate of 86 percent. Graduates typically earn monthly salaries between ₹12,000 and ₹23,000, with many reporting greater financial stability and independence.

Strengthening Rural Infrastructure

Alongside education and healthcare initiatives, GMDC–GVT supports rural infrastructure projects that improve everyday life in communities around its operations.

During FY 2024–25, the organisation completed 100 infrastructure projects, benefiting over one lakh people. These initiatives included:

Supporting the Defenders of the Nation

GMDC has maintained a long association with the Border Security Force (BSF) in the strategically important Kutch region. Through its CSR initiatives, the company has supported infrastructure needs for security personnel operating in challenging environments.

This has included providing earth-moving equipment for infrastructure development and supplying durable tents for maritime security operations near Sir Creek. These efforts strengthen logistical support for personnel safeguarding India’s borders.

Preserving Heritage

Shyamji Krishna Varma Memorial

GMDC–GVT also contributes to the preservation of India’s cultural and historical heritage. Since 2010, the organisation has been entrusted with the upkeep of the Shyamji Krishna Varma Memorial in Mandvi, Kutch.

In 2025, the memorial was revitalised with several new features including the Viranjali Gallery, a life exhibit, rare letters and literature, immersive digital experiences and a light and sound show. Plans are underway for Kranti Sarovar and a dedicated Freedom Fighters’ Gallery.

With over 24 lakh visitors, the memorial continues to honour the legacy of one of India’s early freedom fighters while inspiring future generations.

Expanding Community Partnerships in Odisha

As GMDC expands its presence in Odisha, the company has begun engaging with local communities even before the start of operations. The focus is on building trust and understanding local needs.

One of the early initiatives was a ₹50 lakh contribution to the Jagannath Temple in Puri, helping construct a canopy at Anand Bazaar to provide shelter for devotees and temple priests during extreme weather conditions.

CSR initiatives in Angul and Sundargarh districts are being implemented through a phased approach that includes strengthening education, improving healthcare access and supporting local infrastructure.

Recognition and Impact

Independent impact assessments conducted by IRMA and IIPH have highlighted the positive socio-economic outcomes of GMDC–GVT’s integrated CSR approach across education, healthcare and infrastructure. In recognition of its efforts, GMDC–GVT received the FIMI Sitaram Rungta Award (2023–24) for impactful and systematic CSR initiatives.
